Subject: Arsenal to appeal against Giroud red card

Arsenal have launched an appeal against the dismissal of striker Olivier Giroud, in Saturday's Premier League match at Fulham.

The Frenchman was shown the red card during their 1-0 win at Craven Cottage, after a late tackle on Fulham's Stanislav Manolev.

Giroud's side had already played 78 minutes against a 10-man Fulham side, who had midfielder Steve Sidwell sent off early in the game.

Gunners' boss Arsene Wenger already hinted that they would be appealing: "Giroud told me he did slip and went a bit over the ball", he said.

"Knowing that Steve Sidwell had been sent off, when the referee went to see him, we knew it would be a red card.

"We will have to deal with that now because he will miss three games and that is not easy for us to cope with.

"Nobody would say Giroud is a dirty player, it is purely accidental, but sometimes accidental can be dangerous."

The North London team could potentially lose the 17-goal striker for up to three games, with the possibility of another if they deem Arsenal's appeal to be frivolous.

The club have just four games left this season and currently lie in third, on course for automatic Champions League qualification.
